Thanks to the eco-friendly awareness rise up,  silicone leather have been promoted everywhere in recent years, some companies even choose one more challenging road----Bio-based Silicone Leather. Here I am writing one article to explain three kinds of Bio-based Substrate Layers which are used in silicone leather.

PLA corn-fiber 

PLA has been widely used in various industries. When we sit on the plane, the beautiful elegant flight attendants deliver delicious food with the disposable food packaging, we can see PLA fork, spoon, knife packed in PLA bags, due to it's 100% composting capacity ( in general when it is placed in the commerial composting facility, it can be composted into carbon dioxide and water), PLA cutlery have been in a large scale adopted in European countries and in China. In Silicone Leather industry, most customers prefer corn-fiber cloth to be the substrate layer which can resist high temperature as high as 180℃, corn-fiber cloth is made of 100% corn, the fiber is extracted from corn which can be grown up if the temperature, humidity and sunlight live up to their growing requirements, it is 100% deliberated from the petrol-made cloth like polyester, nylon etc, in the future, corn-fiber bio-based substrate layer will be the top one choice for customers to choose.

in 2024, to meet customers' requests, Timwell applied for Bio-based testing from Beta Analytic testing company ( which has been emerged into SGS this year), the testing report shows that Timwell's bio-based silicone leather can reach 76% biobased carbon content. Please contact us for the complete testing report.

Rayon (Artificial Silk)

Rayon, also called Artificial Silk, which is made from wood, cotton, or bamboo etc, it is one kind of man-made very soft bio-based cloth, compared to PLA, Rayon is not a new material, it has been widely largely used in the production of T-shirt, dress, towel, bedding material because of its softness. Rayon can be used with polyester together such as 50% rayon+ 50% polyester,  silicone leather support rayon as the substrate layer.

Bio-based Bamboo Fiber

Compared to PLA fiber, bamboo fiber is a very mature material, originating from bamboo, it is bio-based, bamboo is growing very fast, most kinds of bamboos can grow 3-10M per year, some species bamboos even can grow up to 30-40M, especially in China, we have many places where are suitable for bamboo's growing, which means bamboo fiber can be a great bio-based content material sources. The pricing is also more reasonable than PLA fiber.
